Chapter 12

The police station was much quieter than the last time Helena had been there. As she approached the building, she noticed there were no longer many cars parked outside, almost deserted quality. At first, Helena worried the station might not be open. Taking a second, closer look at the building, she was relieved to see the main door was ajar, indicating somebody was still inside.

Helena climbed out of the car and walked up the steps, clutching the photo of Jessie in front of the pub she had found in the local history folder. She had considered asking John for more photos but knew it was wrong to do so until she could be sure of her suspicions. Especially after his reaction when she had asked for the postcards. She didn’t want to draw attention to her suspicions until the police had the chance to look into them. No doubt it would be down to the police in any case, should they need more photos.

There was no one behind the counter. Looking around for signs of life, she rang the bell on the counter and waited for someone to come and deal with her.

Sarah walked through to the main counter. She hadn’t been expecting anyone this late on a Sunday and had been tidying things away in the back, before heading off home herself. As a general rule, the police station usually closed over the weekend. Instead, Sarah usually spent her on-duty days out in the community talking to people, leaving contact details should anyone need to reach her. As the station wasn’t manned all the time, there was also a telephone set into a little cabinet on the front door which connected directly with the main station back in Dunedin. Since the body had been discovered, they decided to increase police visibility and rostered extra shifts, with additional officers coming from Dunedin to help Sarah cover the area. The police station was to be opened seven days a week, at least for the time being, while the community came to terms with what had happened and in case anyone had any information they wanted to share with the police. The sooner things were back to normal and quieter again, the better.

“Oh, hello. Helena isn’t it?” she said with a little bit of surprise, seeing Helena standing waiting for her. “What can I do to help you?”

“I’m sorry to bother you. I’ve just been thinking a lot about the body I found. There were just a few things I wanted to ask, or explain, or I don’t know, talk to you about, I suppose.” Helena’s words tumbled out in a rush.

“Okay.” Sarah nodded encouragingly. “Would you like to come through?”

Sarah lifted the counter for Helena to follow her to the back office. Compared to the last visit, this time there was no sound from the other rooms, other than the two of them walking into the echoing room. The other detectives and members of the investigation who had filled the space before had left, returning to their comfortable desks at the Dunedin Station.
